Parole is the term used to describe early release from prison after being convicted of a serious crime, with conditions such as staying in a specific area and checking in with a supervisor. Someone who committed a lesser offense may be eligible for probation instead, allowing them to conditionally remain in the community based on their conduct.

This resource provides available options for quickly and conveniently looking up information about parolees in Connecticut and also touches on finding probationer details.

How To Conduct a Connecticut Parole Search on Prior Inmates

In Connecticut, the Board of Pardons & Paroles holds regular hearings and makes decisions about whether parole is granted for a given inmate, and those who are released fall under the supervision of the Department of Parole & Community Services.1, 2

The Connecticut Department of Corrections maintains a database of inmates, including those currently in jail and those who have been released from prison.3 This database is a good starting point for a parole search in Connecticut.

The Offender Information Search Tool is free for anyone to use. Simply enter all or part of the offender’s last name and optionally provide their first name (or initial).4 If a date of birth or inmate number is known, these details can help narrow the search.

After clicking “Search All Inmates,” a list of inmates will appear, along with details of their current status. If the inmate has a common surname, the list could be quite long, but all the results should appear on one scrollable page. Clicking on an inmate number will provide more information about the inmate.

To check whether an inmate is currently on parole, a searcher can look at the information in the “Facility” column of the table. If the letters PO are indicated (such as BRIDGEPORT PO or NEW HAVEN PO, for example), this indicates that the offender is under the supervision of a parole officer in that area.

The Offender Information Search page isn’t protected by an SSL certificate. This means some modern web browsers may display an error when users first navigate to the website. Users may need to click a button to proceed to the HTTP version of the website.

They may also see a red cross on the padlock in their browser window. It’s safe to ignore this warning, as the website isn’t asking for financial information or personally identifying documents.

Track Down Parole Violators & Escapees Throughout Connecticut

If someone has escaped from prison, this will be highlighted in the search results shown on the Offender Information Search Tool after a parole search in Connecticut is performed.4 The word “escape” will appear instead of a facility name.

The State of Connecticut Judicial Branch also maintains a search tool for Arrest Warrants that covers ones issued for violation of probation or failure to appear, and orders to incarcerate. To find out if a person is on this list, a searcher can simply enter all or part of the person’s last name. The search can be narrowed by providing the relevant town, court location, the offender’s first name and an approximate year of birth.

The results page will show a list of individuals who match the details provided and have a warrant against them. The table includes several pieces of information, including:

  • Offender Name
  • Last Known Address
  • Town
  • Birth Year
  • The Date the Warrant was Issued
  • Docket Number & Court Details
  • Warrant Type (e.g. Failure To Appear or Violation of Probation)

Clicking on the offender’s name will open a new page with information about that specific offender and a photograph of the offender, if one is available.

The database is updated regularly, and the time and date of the most recent update are shown at the top of the page. The results are limited to adult offenders, and the database doesn’t claim to be a complete listing of all outstanding warrants. A warrant might be excluded from the database if there’s reason to believe that publishing information about that warrant could present a safety risk.

How To Find Inmates in a Connecticut State Prison

The Connecticut State Department of Correction (DOC) provides an Offender Information Search Tool that provides information about current and past inmates.3, 4

Users can search by the offender’s CT DOC Inmate Number, first name, last name or date of birth. The Department of Corrections recommends searchers use a broad search, for example providing only the first few characters of the inmate’s surname, to get better results.

Clicking the “Search All Inmates” button will return a list of matching results, including the following details:

  • Inmate Number
  • Inmate Name
  • Date of Birth
  • The Facility in Which They’re Being Held

Each inmate number is a hyperlink. Clicking on the number will open an Inmate Information page providing further details such as the maximum length of their sentence, the primary offense they were jailed for and their estimated release date.

Friends and family members of people who are currently serving time in a Connecticut state prison can make arrangements to visit, communicate with or send money to inmates. The Department of Correction provides a Family & Friends Handbook to help people navigate through the prison system and understand how the visitation system works.7

Visitation policies vary, depending on the level of the facility the inmate is being held in. Loved ones can find information about the state’s prison facilities on the Department of Correction website’s Facilities page.

There are several ways to send money to inmates, and these options are detailed on the Inmate Accounts page.8 An Inmate Trust Fund office processes payments, which can be sent via JPAY, TouchPay or Western Union.

For information about inmate accounts, call the Inmate Trust Fund office at 860-692-7670.

Crime victims have the right to notification of court proceedings, as well as information about the sentence, imprisonment or release of the offender. The Office of Victim Services documents these rights as part of the Constitution of the State of Connecticut Article First, Section 8(b) – Rights of Victims of Crime.11

The Parole & Community Services Department is responsible for the supervision of offenders who have been released into the community. The Department of Correction provides a list of regional Parole & Community Services offices.2 The results of a parole search in Connecticut will most likely include details of the county into which the offender was released, helping interested parties contact the correct supervising office.

Anyone who has concerns about a parolee or fugitive can contact the anonymous tip line at (860)503-9333 or by email to [email protected].

How To Tell if an Individual Is on Probation or Under Community Supervision in Connecticut

Parole is typically used for inmates who have been convicted of a serious offense and then released from prison. Probation is used for less serious offenses, where the courts rule it makes more sense to rehabilitate the offender in the community.

Probation offices aren’t usually able to provide information about a probationer’s status. However, they might be able to assist if someone has concerns about a probationer’s well-being or conduct. A full list of probation offices in Connecticut is available to help individuals find their nearest branch.12

The State of Connecticut Judicial Branch provides a database of Criminal & Motor Vehicle Convictions, which can be searched by the name of the defendant. It’s possible to conduct a search with only a few letters of the offender’s surname, although more information—such as an approximate birth year, the offender’s first initial or the court in which the case was held—will help narrow the search.

The search results page will show:

  • Defendant’s Name (LAST, FIRST, MIDDLE)
  • Birth Year
  • Court
  • Docket Number
  • Disposition
  • Sentencing Date

Clicking on the docket number will provide more details of the case. If the offender was released on probation, this will be highlighted in the “Overall Sentence Information” table.

The Judicial Branch website covers the entire state. To find information about cases in a specific area, simply select that area from the Court Location dropdown. For example, for cases in Stamford, select “Stamford Judicial District”.

Other useful sources of information include the Connecticut State Department of Emergency Services & Public Protection, which can provide information about police incidents, and the State Police Bureau of Identification, which can assist with criminal record information.14, 15

Requests for information about a person’s criminal history can be made by printing and posting a request form to:

Department of Emergency Services & Public Protection
State Police Bureau of Identification
1111 Country Club Road
Middletown, CT 06457

Phone: (860)685-8480

There’s a fee of between $36 and $75 for such record requests, depending on the type of record required. Details of the fees are shown on the request form.

The resources listed above can be invaluable for people looking for information about probationers and parolees in Connecticut. By going through the Department of Correction or the Board of Pardons & Paroles, it’s possible to find plenty of information about offenders for free.

All that’s needed to perform a Connecticut parole search is the name of the offender – although other details, such as their age, could help narrow down results.
